WCC Lake District Weekend 2022

Windmill Cycle Club Special Event

WCC Lake District Weekend 2022

Event Status:

Game On!

Organiser(s):

Andy Ross

Start Date:

Saturday

May 14, 2022

Ride Start:

Brathay Lodge, Rothay Road, Ambleside LA22 0EE

Start Time:

12.00

This Ride is now fully allocated.

This is a tough weekend of riding and we want to ensure everyone has fun, even when swearing at the next hill, so we have to be selective in terms of ability to do these big rides and keep up with the rest.

Note we have decided to split each ride into two smallish groups - one doing longer rides led by Andy with a lot of climbing (e.g. 1800m on day 2), the other led by Phil doing shorter less hilly versions (still tough at say 1250-1500m on day 2).

A reasonable yardstick of required fitness for this trip is whether by May you are comfortable doing all day local rides. Realistically if you find riding more than a few hours a struggle then this is not a weekend for you!

We are staying at Brathay Lodge in Ambleside which is very well equipped for groups. Room rate is c £60pp per night.

Plan is drive up on Sat 14 May in the morning, then an afternoon ride. Full day ride on the Sunday. Then a less hilly half day ride on Monday, before driving back.

Preparation

Service your bike, or at a minimum check that it has newish brake pads and the gears are fine. Fingers crossed for sunshine, or at least not pouring rain – this trip will anyway go ahead regardless. Just check the weather forecast before heading off, and adjust your clothes accordingly
Try to get as many cycle miles in as you can, pre-trip.
Bring some warmer clothes, and a spare layer/rain jacket to carry on the ride. Weather can quickly change, and don't underestimate the potential for a cold wind on top of the hills. Given a lot of the riding is fairly remote, make sure you ride with enough water and snacks.

What to bring

Must have spare bits for your bike:
Rear mech hanger (this tends to be unique to your bike, and can easily be damaged by a rock); chain link (hard to fix a broken chain without it); inner tubes; pump; if running tubeless tyre patch/stans fluid/CO2 inflator & cartridges.
Nice to have spare bits:
Extra set of brake pads, spare gear cable; oil lube; cycle energy gels are great for tired legs on long rides. They really can make the difference between finishing a ride or crashing out. Always have some spare with you.
